ABSTRAKSI: Modulator Mach Zehnder merupakan device yang terintegrasi dan dapat mendukung suatu jaringan serat optik agar menjadi lebih handal. Device tersebut memiliki kapasitas bandwidth yang besar. Device tersebut memiliki kecepatan pemodulasian sampai dengan orde giga.
Pada tugas akhir ini akan berbicara tentang karakteristik yang terdapat pada modulator Mach Zehnder. Karakteristik yang dimaksud adalah peristiwa interferensi yang terjadi di lengan modulator dan akan diketehui bagaimana efeknya terhadap intensitas yang ada pada keluaran. Modulator Mach Zehnder adalah salah satu device elektrooptik yang bekerja berdasarkan interferensi yang dihasilkan dari gelombang cahaya yang koheren.
Pada modulator Mach Zehnder, gelombang cahaya terbagi 2 oleh coupler 3-db sehingga menghasilkan gelombang yang sama besar dan sefasa. Pada lengan interaksi pertama diberikan tegangan listrik dengan tegangan yang berbeda-beda. Sehingga mengakibatkan suatu perpaduan antar dua gelombang yang menimbulkan interferensi. Fasa gelombang datang pada lengan pertama akan berbeda dengan fasa yang awal karena terjadi inerferensi pada lengan modulator. Namun tidak hanya peristiwa interferensi yang menyebabkan perubahan fasa tetapi bahan penyusun juga menyebabkan perubahan fasa pada lengan. Pada lengan berikutnya, gelombang akan kembali dipadukan dengan gelombang yang tidak diberi tegangan listrik. Namun kedua gelombang cahaya tidak lagi sefasa sehingga pada saat penggabungan akan terlihat intensitas yang berbeda pada keluaran.
Pada modulator Mach Zehnder, intensitas yang dikeluarkan akan maksimum jika perbedaan fasa antar kedua lengan adalah 00 dan minimum jika fasa berbeda 1800. Karakter ini juga terdapat pada transfer karakteristik modulator.

This final project will discuss about the characteristic of Mach Zehnder modulator. The characteristic is the interference that will be held in arm of the modulator. And we can know how the effect to the intensity of the output. The Mach Zehnder modulator is one of the electrooptic which works with the interference that produce from the optical wave with the coherent phase.
In Mach Zehnder modulator, the optical wave was splitted by the 3-db coupler and produce the wave with the same phase. At the first arm, the voltage is applied with different voltage. So it make some interference because the voltage induce make some stimulate waves. The phase of the first arm will be different from the beginning it comes, because the intereference will be held in that arm. Not only interference make the different of phase, but the material which is use in Mach Zehnder modulator makes some influence, too. In the next step, that wave will recombinate with the wave in other arm that split with the first wave. So it not the coheren wave like the first because the phase have been different. So at the output of Mach Zehnder modulator produce the new intensity cause the phase different.
In Mach Zehnder modulator, the intensity were being a maximum if the phase different is 0o and minimum if the different of phase is 180o. The transfer characteristic is the same with the intensity.
