A kite detection system for distribution networks was designed using the YOLOv8 object detection algorithm and the LoRa communication protocol. The system is expected to detect the presence of kites so that interference can be avoided. By doing so, the resilience of the electrical energy distribution network can be improved.
This research addresses the problem of how to develop a kite detection system that can detect and prevent kite-related disturbances, particularly three-phase faults, in distribution networks and assess its feasibility from an economic perspective. The system has been tested in both laboratory and real environment scenarios.
It can be concluded that the Potential Revenue Loss (PRL) after the system is implemented decreases by 1.36% for laboratory scale testing and 2.23% for the real environment testing. Therefore, it can be concluded that the system can enhance the resilience of electrical distribution network. These findings validate the recommendation for implementing the kite detection system as a strategic measure to support the resilience of the electrical distribution network against kite-related disturbances.
