What else can be said about Laika that hasn’t already been uttered repeatedly, often by me, over the last seven years? Coraline is still the most dazzling use of 3D in an animated film you’ve ever seen (the third act played like a fever dream in theaters), while ParaNorman was a potently emotional (and sadly topical) hybrid of The Sixth Sense and Silent Hill with rollicking zombie adventure thrown in for good measure. The Boxtrolls was lighter on the outside but held within a sadly prescient "doomed to repeat it" tale of a power-mad monster willing to scapegoat an entire race to gain admittance to the upper class.
